Ear Infection Remedies

Ear infections. We have all suffered because of this, mostly when we were young and even as adults, though it is not as common among adults as in children. Some actually heal on their own, some need medication to avoid future complications that might result in severe issues like hearing loss. There are mainly three types of ear infection, namely, outer ear infections (otitis externa), middle ear infections (otitis media) and inner ear infections (otitis interna). Among these, the middle ear infection is the commonest of all. People suffering from allergies are more prone to this.

Though adults are not affected as frequently as children, it is important for adults to be aware of how adult ear infection can affect them. Adult ear infection is caused by infection in the Eustachian tube, near the inner ear. The Eustachian tube connects the inner ear to the nasal passages in order to drain fluid from the ears and equalize pressure between outside and inside of the body, but when fluid or mucous builds up in the Eustachian tube, it is an easy target for infection.

Here are some of my favorite middle ear infection remedies :

Essential oils
Warm a teaspoon of vegetable oil like olive oil, and add to it 3 drops of tea tree and 2 drops of lavender. Soak a piece of cotton wool in this and use to plug the ear. You can also use a massage oil around the ears, neck and cheeks. An effective massage oil combination is 1 drop of thyme, 3 drops of tea tree and 2 drops lavender.

Garlic
Garlic is great for ear infections. Some of my elderly patients swear by peeling a clove of garlic, wrapping it in gauze and placing it in the affected ear overnight. You can put some olive oil in the ear first to prevent any skin irritation. You can also drip some warmed garlic oil or liquid garlic extract in the ear every 2-3 hours. These middle ear infection remedies should not be used if the ear drum is perforated.

Improve your diet
An imbalanced diet with too much refined food causes an accumulation of toxins and a breeding ground for bacteria. It is important to base the diet around fresh fruit and vegetables, quality proteins, natural oils and small amounts of whole grains.

Some Symptoms of Ear Infection:

Nausea, vomiting.

Have trouble sleeping.

Develop a fever.

Fail to respond to sounds.

The cause is a germ infecting the outer ear canal. Most often this is caused by bacteria (which can be treated with antibiotics), but sometimes other causes, such as fungus infection, are to blame.

Ear infection is a common ailment suffered by many babies and children. Today's parents know more than enough about how to cure ear infection. One of the bad things about ear infections is that they most often occur at night, with no help around. In this article, I will tell you how to cure ear infection as well as prevent it from occurring in future.

Treatment:

- Sour foods must be avoided as they vitiate the kapha. These include curds and fruits that are sour in taste.

- Bananas, watermelons, oranges, papayas and cucumbers must be avoided. These foods can increase the chances of having common cold. This would aggravate the ear problem. For the same reason, all refrigerated foods must also be avoided.

- Valuable foods during ear problems are onion, ginger and garlic. Turmeric is also very good, and must be used for spicing the meals.
